For this personal project, I wanted to design a Tarot-inspired illustration of my Starfinder character, Delphinium. He is a biohacker, physician, and was one of the group’s main scientists with little magical skill of his own. Because his concept is grounded in empirical study, and he was positioned as an authority figure in the field of medical science, I felt the King of Swords best represented him.
BiddyTarot describes the King of Swords this way:
The King of Swords sits upon his throne, facing forward as if ready to confront whatever life throws at him. He holds a sword in his right hand, the hand of the conscious, rational mind, and points it upright and to the left, the side of the subconscious, intuitive mind.
I altered some of the symbols to fit the character and setting better. Instead of a proper sword, I’ve given him a rifle. The biohacker class can fire injections at allies and enemies alike, and Delphinium carries a rifle for this purpose. Since it’s his primary weapon, I used the rifle for his “sword.”
He holds a scanning device in his left hand. Biohackers have a custom scanner that enables them to analyze almost anything they encounter. The scanner is a key element to the class’s game play, so I felt I should include it. This gave me the opportunity to incorporate a holographic HUD and add some abstract sci-fi elements to make the illustration feel more mystical, while still grounding it in the Starfinder setting.
